Ruth Porter appeared on Newsnight to discuss capping child-benefits and challenged the purpose of the Welfare State. She questioned what kind of country we want to be, arguing that the point of the welfare state is to help those who cannot survive without it.

As spending on welfare increases, so does the bill that we pass onto our children, Porter stated. Whilst this measure would take money off many families, she believes that the public are in favour of money-saving reforms.

This policy is a nod in the right direction in so far as it attempts to curtail public spending, however benefits such as the winter fuel tax should also be assessed, Ruth Porter argued.
