Daily Mail leads child benefit coverage with IEA comment

Hundreds of thousands of parents are to be dragged into the self-assessment system after failing to opt out of child benefit by last night’s deadline.

In what has been called the most incompetent change to the benefits system since 1945, homes where one earner is on £60,000 or more will be ineligible for the benefit from today.

Professor Philip Booth, of the Institute of Economic Affairs, said: ‘The Government is indulging in family bashing by its decision to withdraw child benefit from those families with somebody earning more than £50,000. 

This is direct discrimination against couple families – especially single-earner couple families. It is probably the single most incompetent change to the benefits system since the Second World War.’
