Easing childcare regulation will help reduce costs

Steve Davies appears on BBC Radio Merseyside

Steve Davies appeared on BBC Radio Merseyside supporting proposals to ease regulation in the childcare industry.

Dr Davies stated that high childcare costs must be reduced. Costing approximately 41% of the average wage, any reduction in the cost with little detrimental effect on quality should be welcomed. By increasing the ratio of staff members to children, childcare providers can operate with lower levels of staff for the same number of children, thereby lowering costs.

Dr Davies argued that childcare ratios in comparable countries such as the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden are much higher than in the UK. Despite having no upper limit on ratios, it is widely accepted that Sweden offers the best quality childcare in Europe.
