Foreign aid: Free trade is less costly and more effective

Along with healthcare, foreign aid has been ringfenced from spending cuts. In a debate on BBC Radio 4's You & Yours, Dr Richard Wellings, Deputy Editorial Director at the IEA, argues that foreign aid is not only hugely costly for taxpayers at home, but is also counterproductive and can crowd out local enterprise in recipient countries. He says Western governments should help developing countries by removing trade barriers and aid should be funded by private donations rather than taxpayers' money.
