Free school meals to cost £600 million

Millions of infants are to get free school meals under a £600 million plan announced by Nick Clegg today.

The landmark move will see the youngest primary school kids in England get a guaranteed hot lunch from September next year.

Mr Clegg, whose youngest child is five, said it will help 1.5million children aged five to seven, saving their parents an average of £400 a year per child.

Speaking ahead of his big conference speech tomorrow, he said: “Millions of parents across the country are feeling the squeeze.

"Over the course of a year families spend over £400 lunch money for each child. I am determined to do all we can to help put money back in the pockets of these families.

“From next September we’ll give every child in reception, year 1 and year 2 a healthy lunch every day.”

The Institute of Economic Affairs, said it was an “enormously bad use of public money”.
