Richard Wellings appeared on BBC Look North to discuss changes to the welfare system.
Dr Wellings stated that reducing the welfare bill is a step in the right direction with the deficit at such a high level. However, with regards to the removal of spare bedroom subsidies, he argued that the government has some of the details wrong. Many areas in the North East England have a lack of single bedroom housing making it difficult for individuals with spare bedrooms to relocate.
Dr Wellings went on to argue that the government should consider addressing and reducing living costs such as food and housing bills before reforming the welfare state.
