Help to Buy will inflate prices and expose taxpayer to risk

Philip Booth appears on BBC Newsnight

Following recent criticism of the government's Help to Buy programme, Philip Booth appeared on BBC Newsnight to discuss the problems with the policy.

Professor Booth argued that government lending to individuals who have been rejected by the commercial sector is a dangerous policy for two major reasons.

  1. It is inflating prices that are already high relative to earnings.
  2. It exposes the taxpayer to risk.

He went on to state that the real solution to the housing crisis is to liberalise housing supply.
