Horsemeat scandal will not be resolved by raising meat prices

Chris Snowdon discusses the horsemeat scandal on Channel 4 News

Following the horsemeat scandal, Christopher Snowdon appeared on Channel 4 News to discuss the issue.

"This is a straightforward case of fraud. People have been passing off various different foods for centuries, it happens in restaruants, it happens in small shops, it's not specific to processed food," stated Mr Snowdon.

He went on to argue that the food supply is perfectly safe and that the reason horsemeat was able to be sold as beef was because the relevant regulatory bodies never used to test for it.

"We're very lucky to have a meat supply which is relatively cheap but food is still a big part of people's budgets. If meat was more expensive there would be even more of an incentive to bring in cheap horsemeat."
