Richard Wellings appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live to discuss HS2.
Dr Wellings argued that there are three major risks with HS2. The risk that the government will use it during a general election to buy off the opposition, that local councils will use it to lobby for their own transport schemes and that towns surrounding the stations will need major regeneration. All of this will make HS2 more expensive and although some will benefit it will not be good value for money. Dr. Wellings suggested that improving transport links between northern cities makes more sense and will cost less.
