Means-tested benefits damage incentive to work

Steve Davies appears on BBC Radio Sussex and BBC Radio Somerset

In the lead-up to major changes to the UK benefits system, Steve Davies appeared on BBC Radio Sussex and BBC Radio Somerset to discuss implications of the new policies.

Dr Davies stated that the although the outlined changes to the system will make it simpler and better to work, the plans do not go far enough. As the welfare system is means-tested it makes it difficult to avoid "a severe penalty for going back to work".

He also went on to argue that although the UK spends more than many European countries on the benefits system, we get much worse results. A contributory-based system similar to Singapore would be more effective.
