New approach to development aid needed

Our approach to development aid has suffered too long from an inability to see the big picture.

We have swallowed wholesale the idea that if developed countries can just give 0.7 per cent of GDP in aid all will be well with the world.

David Cameron holds the target as a badge of compassion – but reality is far more complicated.

Not only does development aid not help with economic growth, there is some evidence it can in fact cause harm. This is especially true in its tendency to increase corruption in already corrupt regimes.
