Poor households devastated by rising water prices

Water bills in the UK will rise by 3.5% on average and up to 9.3% in the South-East. Increasing utilities prices have raised debt pressures with the National Debt Helpline observing a record high of 19,667 calls last year for help with water bills.

"Rising water bills are having a devastating effect on low-income households," said the IEA.

"In some areas, poorer people are spending more than 10 per cent of their income on water, leaving less for essentials such as food."
