Richard Wellings appeared on BBC Parliament's Politics on Track to discuss the British rail industry.
Dr Wellings argued that rail subsidies, at £6bn per year, are immensely damaging to the wider economy. Taxes needed to fund these subsidies result in job losses and business closures across other industries.
Regarding HS2, Dr Wellings stated that it appears to be a heavily loss-making project if we look at vital figures such as passenger numbers. This is echoed by the fact that the project is funded by the taxpayer rather than private investors expecting a return on their investment.
