Standing only train carriages a good idea

Richard Wellings talks to BBC Radio 5

Richard Wellings told BBC Radio 5 Live that a new economy class on trains would be a good idea that could increase capacity on an already over burdened rail network.

A new, standing only, class of train travel would also be beneficial for lower paid employees to travel to work, Richard Wellings said. Currently, commuters are used to standing on busy trains during rush-hour, suggesting that a new and cheaper standing only carriage would be popular.

The government’s idea of creating a ‘middle-class’ between first-class and second-class would make no difference, as there is little variation in current standards, Wellings asserted.
