The real cost of HS2 could be £80bn

Ruth Porter and Richard Wellings appear on a number of BBC regional radio stations

Richard Wellings and Ruth Porter appeared on a number of BBC regional radio stations to discuss recent IEA research on HS2.

The government’s estimate of £42.6 billion doesn’t take into account the cost of regeneration, changes to routes because of local opposition, or extra tunnelling. For example the original route went through three manufacturing plants in Sheffield which was opposed by Nick Clegg. The rates of return are very low and other alternatives would be much better value, the government chose HS2 despite knowing this and now has no political incentive to present the accurate cost to taxpayers.
