IEA Head of Public Policy Ryan Bourne disussed the proposal of removing the free bus pass to over 60's on the Alan Titchmarsh Show. He argued that pensioners should be amongst those feeling the cuts in public expenditure, given that the free bus pass is a very uneven mechanism for redistributing income. This is because it only benefits those pensioners able to travel unaided, with near reliable bus services. Furthermore, he argues that pensioners should bear some of the burden as an aging population would lead to the costs associated with these programmes spiraling.
