In response to the Conservatives manifesto plans, Mark Littlewood, Director General of the Institute of Economic Affairs, said:
The people power rhetoric of the Conservatives sadly isnt matched by their spending plans.
The Conservatives are rightly emphasising the urgent need to devolve power, but a real devolution of power must be matched by a sizeable reduction in Whitehall expenditure.
If the aim is to secure a large transfer of power from the centralised bureaucracy to individuals and local communities, then this needs to be reflected in substantial tax reductions.
The Conservatives flagship policy on education comes closest to genuine empowerment, but ducks the need to allow for-profit schools. Profit, not just good will, will be required to help motivate genuine local enterprise.
