Responding to David Cameron’s speech today on the Big Society, Mark Littlewood, Director General of the Institute of Economic Affairs, calls on the Prime Minister to outline what the government will stop doing. He said:
“This Big Society initiative is full of promising rhetoric, but still seems to be based largely on bigger government, not a bigger role for individuals.”
“Funding expert organisers and assigning bureaucrats to deliver a vast range of programmes is expanding the role of government, not liberating and empowering local people.”
“While some of the specifics of David Cameron’s announcements are welcome, such as giving local communities more control over their budgets, the Prime Minister is still falling into the trap of listing all the things his government will do. A Big Society needs a Prime Minister who will list all the things his government will stop doing.”
