Sixty-two new schools are not enough. You almost certainly cannot bring about a revolution in English education with just 62 schools. Yet that is the paltry number that had applied for “free school” status as of August last year.
Michael Gove’s vision for schooling is extraordinary; it is ambitious, daring and thoughtful, but it risks failing. For-profit schools are the critical factor in the Swedish reforms that Gove seeks to emulate here, yet he seems determined not to encourage their use in England.
