Yesterday’s speech from Labour  showed again an opposition still casting around for a coherent policy on the economy. It’s hard not to let the mind wander towards thoughts of what Tony Blair might be doing now in Ed Miliband ’s situation.
Ever the political operator, how would he respond to the challenges Labour and the country face? Uppermost in his mind would be the question of how to wrongfoot the coalition and steal their ground.
Blair understood the politics of aspiration and didn’t indulge in the politics of envy. His first move would be to do the opposite of what Miliband has done. Blair would have come out promising to abolish the 50p tax rate. As well as the fact that at least over the medium term is likely to reveal that it brings in less revenue, he would have detested the message it is sending to business.
