It’s the perennial dilemma for those who believe in limited government – how does one change a culture?
Decades of dependency have gradually eroded notions of independence and self-reliance. As the dust begins to settle on this Budget , it’s worth looking at it through this different lens.
In theory there is some common ground across the Coalition on this. Both Conservatives and Liberal Democrats (at least of the Orange Book variety) agree that more government is not the answer. One would think this should offer hope of an alternative approach to that previously pursued by Labour, but this requires a shift from nudging to nurturing.
Showing people what their tax is being spent on is a perfect example of a restorative measure. It moves away from the government engineering people’s choices, and towards the government empowering people to make decisions themselves. Economic literacy is the first step to responsibility.
