Mark Littlewood discussed Iain Duncan Smith's introduction of a new universal benefit to replace six exisiting benefits and tax credits and the risk involved.
To overhaul what is a gargantuan and complex welfare system, it would be rash to think anyone could iron out the system without problems. Some people may fall through the gap on technical issues such as whether payments are monthly rather than weekly.
He argued that Iain Duncan Smith and the Coalition are asking the right questions, though. We've had a system which has totally misaligned incentives and led us to a ludicrous situation where people can be worse off if they enter labour market.
