Richard Wellings told the Daily Politics show that the British rail network should be fully privatised. The current system is based on a government imposed, artificial structure that has increased subsidy levels three-fold.
There have been several successes on the railway since privatisation that encourages reform, Richard Wellings argued,. Aging trains have been replaced, passenger and freight numbers are up and there has been an improvement in infrastructure.
Following the West Coast mainland debacle, it is important to start thinking about reforming the whole rail structure and reducing tax payer subsidies, Wellings said. It is important that the same company own the tracks and the trains, so as to run the railway more efficiently.
