IEA fellows Jamie Whyte and Richard D. North appeared on BBC The Big Questions to discuss the morality of tax avoidance.
Jamie Whyte argued that paying more than the legally required amount of tax is effectively a donation to the government. The idea that corporations and individuals are morally obliged to make donations or be charitable is wrong.
Richard D. North argued that firms and individuals are obliged to be good citizens and obey the law. Firms in fact have a moral obligation to minimise their tax revenues to their customers to keep prices down, to their employees and to their shareholders.
