Richard Wellings appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live to discuss IEA research on road privatisation.
The current system does not work at all with motorists paying around £40 bn a year in tax and only a small fraction of that is spent on the network. The implementation of pay as you go would force the system to become much more responsive to the needs of drivers. The IEA research suggests charging drivers around 6p per mile for cars to cover the cost of construction. This is actually much lower than most people pay now in fuel duty.
