The idea of using more schools-based childcare is – on the face of it – a fairly simple solution to a massive problem. According to Liz Truss , the Education Minister, proposals to enable schools to add childcare provision to the school day, to provide more flexibility for parents that work, are finally being considered.
Whatever one thinks about childcare, and especially the dangers of children spending long hours in it, there is no doubt that its affordability has become one of the most pressing matters for vast swathes of British families.
We have workplaces mercifully becoming much more flexible about working hours. And, in recent decades, there has been a more enlightened view about the worth and intellect of women. A consequence of this has been a greater desire for women to stay involved with their jobs after having babies. But the area of schools and childcare just hasn’t caught up.
