Kristian Niemietz appeared on BBC Radio Gloucestershire to discuss housing and unemployment.
Mr Niemietz argued that although unemployment is falling and incomes are higher, the average cost of rent is also increasing at a faster rate. This means that living standards are not improving and more people have to turn to the state for housing benefit to top up their incomes. This problem cannot be solved purely by a strong economy, the housing market itself needs deregulation so that more houses can be built and the supply matches the demand and rent prices are pushed down.
