You don’t need to read the newspapers to get a good understanding of recent economic news. You just need to examine the faces of senior Coalition politicians. Over the past three years they have moved from looking grim and determined to trying to appear stoical and even confident as the British economy has begun to recover.
But at the end of last week we entered a whole new phase. Chancellor George Osborne was doing his best not to look smug. If the latest statistics are to be believed – and they are often drastically revised some months after publication – the UK is growing at its fastest rate since this Government assumed office.
If this trajectory can be sustained, the Tories and Lib Dems reason, the electorate will be feeling markedly better off by polling day, confidence will be high and the Coalition will reap the rewards at the ballot box for nursing the economy back to health.
